Gloria Receives Backing from Highest-Ranked Elected Official in San Diego, First Female Leader of CA State Senate
SAN DIEGO, CA – In yet another sign of his campaign’s building momentum, California State Assemblymember Todd Gloria (D-San Diego), a Democratic candidate for San Diego Mayor in 2020, announced today the endorsement of California State Senate President Pro Tempore Toni Atkins.
“Assemblymember Todd Gloria is the right choice for San Diego,” said Senate President Pro Tempore Toni Atkins. “Todd has proven that he is an effective leader in times of crisis — and a champion for affordable housing and long-term solutions to the homelessness challenges we are facing as a city and region. Todd Gloria has the experience we need at City Hall — and he understands what San Diego needs.”
Senate President Pro Tempore Atkins is a former Acting Mayor for the City of San Diego, San Diego City Councilmember, Speaker of the Assembly, and is the first female leader of the California State Senate. Her position as the President Pro Tempore of the State Senate makes her one of California’s most powerful and influential political actors in the state.
“Senate President Pro Tem Toni Atkins is a towering figure in California. Throughout her history making career in public service, she has shattered glass ceilings and broken down barriers for women and LGBT people. That’s why it is such a tremendous honor to have her support,” said Assemblymember Gloria. “I have been fortunate to work alongside Senate President Pro Tem Atkins on issues we both deeply care about like housing affordability and homelessness. I look forward to continuing to do so as Mayor.”
Senate President Pro Tempore Atkins joins a growing list of prominent endorsers of Assemblymember Gloria’s candidacy for Mayor including U.S. Congresswoman Susan Davis, California State Assemblymember Shirley Weber, former State Senator Christine Kehoe, and Equality California.
