IT’S OFFICIAL: TODD GLORIA EMERGES AS UNITY CANDIDATE FOR SAN DIEGO MAYOR
Gloria Wins 85 Percent of Precincts in City, Holds Top Spot and Near 19-Point Lead Every Day Since March 3 Primary
SAN DIEGO, CA – With the certification of election results by the County Registrar of Voters, it’s official: California State Assemblymember Todd Gloria (D-San Diego) has emerged as the unity candidate to be the next Mayor of the City of San Diego and is advancing with significant momentum to the November general election. According to the results of the March 3 primary election, Assemblymember Gloria won 85 percent of precincts in the City of San Diego and 40 of San Diego’s 43 communities.
“Our campaign is thrilled by the results of the March Primary, and I am grateful for every San Diegan who honored me with their vote,” said Assemblymember Gloria. “Right now though, my single-focus is on keeping San Diegans healthy, safe, and protected from the coronavirus. There has never been a challenge San Diego could not overcome, and I know we will overcome this together.”
Since the closing of polls on March 3, Assemblymember Gloria has led the race for San Diego Mayor. He bested the second-place finisher by over 66,000 votes and nearly 19 percentage points. Assemblymember Gloria won both north of Interstate 8 and south of Interstate 8, leaving no other campaign with a significant geographic base.
Assemblymember Gloria launched his campaign for Mayor in January 2019. Since that time, he has built an unprecedented coalition of support securing the endorsements of the San Diego County Democratic Party, San Diego and Imperial Counties Labor Council, San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce, and California Restaurant Association to name a few. This coalition of support mirrors the results of the Primary with Gloria succeeding in every part of the political spectrum.
If elected, Assemblymember Gloria would be the City of San Diego’s first LGBT person and the first person of color elected Mayor.
