San Diego City Council President Backs Assemblymember Gloria Over Council Colleagues in Mayor’s Race

SAN DIEGO, CA – Just days before the March 3 California Primary, San Diego City Council President Georgette Gómez announced today her pick to be the next Mayor of San Diego: California State Assemblymember Todd Gloria (D-San Diego).“I am excited to endorse my friend, Todd Gloria, to be the next Mayor for the City of San Diego,” said Council President Gómez. “Todd has been a champion for San Diego’s working families on the City Council and in the State Assembly, and will continue to be one when he gets to the Mayor’s office. Together we are going to bring the bold, progressive change that San Diego needs.”

Council President Gómez adds to an impressive coalition of elected leaders supporting Assemblymember Gloria’s campaign for Mayor. This includes local officials such as San Diego City Attorney Mara Elliott, San Diego City Councilmember Chris Ward, and Chula Vista Mayor Mary Salas to name a few. Assemblymember Gloria’s campaign has also been endorsed by the San Diego County Democratic Party, San Diego and Imperial Counties Labor Council, and San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce.

I am humbled to have Council President Gómez’s endorsement in this race. She has been a progressive trailblazer on the San Diego City Council, and we share a vision of creating more affordable housing, better infrastructure, and robust transportation choice,” said Assemblymember Gloria. “As Mayor, I will continue to focus on these issues and more, with the intent to provide community and individual equity to all San Diegans.”

If elected, Assemblymember Gloria will be the City of San Diego’s first person of color, as well as the first LGBTQ person, ever elected Mayor. The primary election will be held on March 3, 2020.
